Residential Collection

El Cerrito City Ordinance requires that all occupied properties must subscribe to weekly solid waste collection service. Standard service includes one toter for solid wastes, one for green waste/compost and one for recycling. Although service may be ordered and paid for by a household tenant, it is the owner of the property that is ultimately liable for the cost of service if the tenant, lessee, or occupant does not pay or is unable to pay the bill in a timely manner.

Automated service and collection guidelines

In the beginning of 2012, Bayview Refuse and Recycling put into place a fully automated collection system to help improve collection efficiency and reduce costs. Automated trucks have a mechanical arm that reaches out and wraps around the toters , lifts them up, and empties the carts content into the top of the truck. To insure collection, your garbage and green waste toters must be placed in the street by 6:00am on your collection day. Please place toters in street, at least 18 inches apart, with wheels up against the curb. Toters should be lined up along the street and and not placed at an angle. Bungee cords must be removed by 6:00 am. Please do not place toters close to cars, overhead branches, power poles, mailboxes, or other objects.

To minimize spillage during the emptying process, please make sure lids are securely shut. Please be sure to bag all ashes, kitty litter, sawdust, and Styrofoam before placing in container. Please do not compact trash or green waste into toters. Contents must be able to fall freely from cart when it is turned upside down. To keep your neighbors happy and your community attractive all toters should be removed from street by 7:00 pm on collection day.

Collection may not necessarily be at the same time each week. Toters that are not set out on time or customers that want to skip their collection are not eligible for credit. If customers want drivers to go back and pick-up the toter there is a $15.00 return charge per toter. However If a customer accidently forgets to put out their toter they may call our office hours and ask for driver to take extra the next pick-up day equal to their missed collection without charge. If our driver skips collection please call our office. If your miss is discovered after office hours please leave a message on our 24-hour voice mail system so we can send the driver back the following morning.

Extra Garbage/Yard Waste

When filled, toter lids should shut completely and no material should extend beyond the container rim. Neither the garbage or green waste toter should be stuffed. Material needs to be able to fall out easily when toter is turned upside down. If you have extra garbage or green waste that does not fit inside your toter it is East Bay Sanitary’s policy that you call our office at least 1 business day before your pick-up (by 2:00 pm). There is a charge for extra garbage or green waste. On occasion, our driver might tag your toter when a can is overloaded and you will be charged for the extra garbage or green waste even though an order was not called in.

*Please note that extra yard waste must be placed in special recyclable yard waste paper bags that can be purchased at your local hardware store. You may also place extra yard waste in any type of container that can be dumped and placed back at the curb. Please keep yard waste bags and reusable containers to a 30lb weight limit. YARD WASTE WILL NOT BE TAKEN IN PLASTIC BAGS!

Bulky Item Pick-Up

Bayview Refuse and Recyling is able to haul bulky items including furniture, mattresses, refrigerators, and other larger items, for an extra charge. Please call our office (510) 237-4614 to schedule a pick-up or free estimate.


The only holidays resulting in collection interruption are Christmas and New Years Day. During those weeks for customers whose collection falls on or after the holiday, your garbage and green waste collection will be one day late for that week only.

Vacation Policy

Households that are going on vacation for a minimum of 1 month or more may call our office to put their service on vacation hold. Credit will be issued only to advance requests with a minimum of four consecutive weeks of interrupted service. A $30.00 processing and reinstatement fee will be assessed to all vacation stops.
